In South Africa, rape culture is a serious problem where violence and harassment against women are widespread. Unfortunately, society often responds with indifference or even blames the victims. Women face significant obstacles when trying to be believed — dismissive attitudes and doubts make it hard to find justice or even understanding. Every day, women struggle to be heard, respected and safe, often feeling alone and betrayed by a society (work, school, friends, family) that frequently ignores the assaults and violence they endure, says 5FM.
The aim of 5 Mid Mornings' '16 Voices' drive is to showcase a new voice and a new story, spotlighting the diverse experiences and perspectives surrounding gender-based violence in South Africa. This storytelling approach aims to educate, foster empathy, and mobilize young listeners to understand and engage with the cause, the station adds.
Each day the team features a new story from diverse voices —survivors, activists, psychologists, social workers, spoken word artists, musicians, listeners who have been impacted by gender-based violence, fellow presenters, a 16-year-old, as well as Stephanie Be and Yonaka Theledi sharing their own experiences.
Some of the contributors are:
- Survivors: Organizations that support survivors to find individuals who are comfortable sharing their stories. These stories would highlight personal experiences, challenges, and journeys toward healing.
- Activists and Advocates: Young activists who are fighting against gender-based violence, showcasing their work and offering ways listeners can get involved.
- Allies and Supporters: Men and allies who are actively working to support women and create safe spaces. They can share how they challenge toxic masculinity and support respectful, equal relationships.
- Mental Health Professionals and Social Workers: Experts who can explain the psychological impact of gender-based violence, offer advice, and promote mental health resources available to listeners.
There’s also a strong focus on hotlines and resources, as each segment will end with a reminder of available resources, such as helplines and local organizations supporting victims of gender-based violence, 5FM concludes.
