The infamous Survivor car curse continues to claim its victims! In last night’s episode of M-Net’s Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina (Wednesday, 24 March), Gys de Villiers – the oldest and once-noted ‘true survivor’ by his tribe mates – was voted off. His own alliance seemingly ditched him in the very same episode in which he won a flashy Volvo X60.

Apart from the first winner of the US Survivor series, Richard Hatch, no-one who has won the car has ever gone on to become the series’ Ultimate Survivor.

The outspoken, no-nonsense actor; writer; and sculptor, who impressed viewers during his stay on Exile Island, will still decide which Survivor wins R500 000 for him/herself and the charity of his/her choice. In next week’s episode, Gys will take his place on the jury bench, already occupied by Hanna Grobler; Louw Venter; and last week’s casualty, Okkert Brits.

Gys received three votes – one more than Kaseran Pillay – and was completely perplexed by the votes cast by his former Chibudu friends, Sade Giliberti and GiGi. They gunned for Kaseran, while he wrote ProVerb’s name down, as agreed earlier.

Was this a clever move on the part of the two ladies who, in last week’s episode, made a surprise and tactical move by aligning with Ashley Hayden? Or was there merely a communication breakdown?

Viewers who still want to support Gys and his charity, Hokisa (Homes for Kids in South Africa), can still do so by bidding for his water bottle on the Survivor online auction. Go to www.mnet.co.za/survivor.

Torture and a hunk in a speedo

This week’s gruelling Immunity Challenge tested the strength; endurance; and pain threshold of the remaining six contestants. The Survivors had to stretch out in a torture chamber designed according to their measurements. Kas bailed out early to receive a clue to a Hidden Immunity Idol instead; Sade was reduced to tears; and Gys knew that dropping his arms would mean the end of his stay on the island. In the end, after an excruciating 22 minutes, Ashley Hayden proved to be the strongest!

The Survivors’ patience was also tested by a rather unusual annoyance – Izak Davel’s infamous little red speedo. A merely practical addition to his wardrobe because “it dries very quickly”, Izak’s posing and insistence on wearing it constantly around the camp seemed to get Sade; Ashley; and GiGi’s temperatures raised – and not in the good way!

Survivor South Africa fans can go to the M-Net website – www.mnet.co.za – to watch exclusive episodic footage and behind the scenes videos. See Gys having his first meal, as well as some expansion on Ashley’s ‘deviousness’.

By visiting the website, viewers also have the opportunity to win amazing prizes, including a Volvo C30; a trip to Indigo Bay Resort and Spa; as well as thousands of Rands worth of Pick n Pay vouchers.
