The production opened in Cape Town in May 2012 to outstanding reviews across the board. With the public demand for tickets being so high, the Fugard Theatre revival of Kat and the Kings has had to extend six times and the show has also been presented to great acclaim in Johannesburg at Pieter Toerien's Theatre at Montecasino. The show is an upbeat, high energy South African musical with a dynamic cast which includes Dean Balie as Young Kat Diamond, veteran actor Danny Butler as Old Kat Diamond, Amy Trout as Lucy, Zak Toerien as Magoo, Grant Peres as Bingo and Carlo Daniels as Ballie. The action is accompanied every night with a full, live onstage band.

Kat and the Kings, directed by David Kramer and dedicated to the late Taliep Petersen, is set in District Six in the late 1950s and explores the journey of teenager Kat Diamond and his a cappella group, The Cavalla Kings. After touring South Africa in 1996, the original production of Kat and the Kings played on the West End in London and On Broadway in New York, winning two prestigious Olivier Awards - the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and the entire cast won the award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1999. Kat and the Kings was also nominated for a Tony, a Drama League and three Drama Desk Awards.
