The Africa Architecture Awards programme has been launched, with the awards ceremony set to take place on Thursday, 28 September. A $10 000 prize will be given to the overall winner.

Entries close on Friday, 30 June and are open to all projects pertaining to Africa. There are four entry categories:

  • Built (representing the widest range of architectural projects);
  • Speculative (promoting imaginative and impactful responses to African contexts);
  • Emerging Voices (recognising the role and importance of education); and
  • Critical Dialogue (stressing the importance of critical writing and discussion about architecture as an important part of the field of architecture itself).

In addition, there are two special awards; a Lifetime Achiever’s Award and the People’s Choice Award, which is decided by public vote. The objectives of the Africa Architecture Awards include the promotion of design excellence within numerous built environment disciplines, the creation of awareness surrounding the importance of these disciplines, the initiation of conversations and connections for prospective collaboration between architects around Africa, and the creation of a platform for emerging talents and voices.
