Together they envisioned two schools being developed specifically for children with disabilities in Pretoria, and they’ve been working tirelessly on realising this dream ever since.
At that stage, Roelofsz was involved with the Pathways-Pretoria project, a centre for children with disabilities, that reaches out to others in need. Van Vuuren received the news in 2012 that their son had down syndrome, and from there on chose to support Club 21, a non-profit school that supports children with this condition.
It was soon thereafter that they met Spies, and the three realised that a far greater need existed. The Be The Hero Foundation was born, to raise much needed funds, and support children with special needs in a broader sense.
Both Pathways and Club 21 are in dire need of new school buildings, and are therefore the two main beneficiaries of the Be The Hero Foundation. The foundation further plans to enable these organisations to find themselves in a position that they will ultimately become fully self-sustaining, through empowerment and inspiring projects. Although funds are needed to develop the infrastructure, there is also a great need for modified vehicles, computers, special communication systems and more.
Spies will be hosting the Truckers Unite Golf Day, on Thursday, 8 May, to raise funds for this worthy cause. “It’s important for all us to be involved somewhere, we can all do something. People with disabilities often get overlooked. I’d really like to change this. They need our love and support. This is your chance to get involved.”
That’s why Spies invites everyone to join him at Woodhill Country Club for a round of golf, together with Breyton Paulse, Jurgen Visser, Werner Kruger, Darren Scott, Arno Jordaan, Bok Van Blerk, Ampie, and many more celebrities where the Truckers Unite 4 Charity Golf Day, made possible through the support of Afrit, Atlas Truck Centre and Interafrica Bureau de Change.
Four-balls can now be purchased at a cost of R10 000 minimum donation and R15 000 for the opportunity to play with a celebrity.
