Europcar, one of South Africa’s leading car rental companies, is the vehicle sponsor for this year’s Tour de Free State, a cycling race that meanders through the Free State Province from 23 to 27 May.
The annual cycling race which is aimed at increasing tourism to the province will this year see both national and international cyclists taking part in the race. The ladies race has been awarded UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) Olympic qualifier status which ensures that UCI points will be awarded to the winners of each stage of the race, thereby potentially assisting another lady from the South African cycling team to qualify for the Olympics which take place in London in just over two months.
Europcar will provide the race organisers with vehicles which will be used at lead vehicles, for transporting of equipment between the various stages and will also provide all 11 international teams with team vehicles for the duration of the tour.
“Cycling is a popular, growing sport for Europcar on a global scale and we are serious about lending our support and sponsorship to this sporting discipline. Safety awareness is vital in ensuring minimal incidents in a race like this and we are happy that we are able to provide safety assistance with our vehicles. As part of our commitment to providing our customers with innovative products, we offer portable cycle racks/carriers with car rental around every recognised cycle race,” says Dawn Nathan-Jones, CEO of Europcar South Africa.
Locally, Europcar also sponsors the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour which takes place in March every year; the Double Century, an exclusive race held annually in the Cape; and the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge.
