Children are the future backbone of society and even from a young age they can inspire and motivate those around them to do more and give more. As this may not always be noticed or acknowledged, Pick ‘n Pay School Club would like to celebrate these acts of kindness and spread the word.

The campaign will run over a two week period, from Monday, 21 January to Friday, 1 February 2013, during which teachers, parents, scholars and community members can nominate a young hero from a local school on their participating local radio station. From Monday, 21 January the campaign will come to life on four regional radio stations’ breakfast shows – Kaya FM, OFM, Algoa FM and East Coast Radio.

“This initiative is aimed at encouraging learners to become more aware of how and where they can make a difference in their own lives by helping others, no matter whether it’s in a big or small way,” says Jason Levin, MD of HDI Youth Marketeers who coordinate the programme on Pick 'n Pay’s behalf. “Everyone has the opportunity to put forward someone they think is deserving of being known heralded as a hero amongst their peers.”

To nominate a local hero, listeners can enter via sms, online at the station’s website or via email. Contact details will be made available on air by the presenters. Each station will select five winners from the entries received and during the following week each winner will be treated to a ‘live’ assembly bust: Pick ‘n Pay and the radio station presenters will invade a school assembly, during which the young hero will be announced and honoured rewarded in front of his/her peers. A selection of prizes will be given to the hero, the school as well as the child’s parents or guardians – this will be a red carpet event to remember for a lifetime.

“We are looking forward to finding out what young South Africans have been up to and how they have overcome obstacles to achieve their goals,” concludes Levin. Tune in to one of the participating radio station and don’t miss out on the chance to nominate someone who one thinks deserves to be celebrated for their achievements or contribution to society.
