Outside Source, which celebrates its first anniversary this month, is heralded as representing a completely new style of deconstructed news for the digital age. Using state-of-the-art touch screen technology, presenter Ros Atkins can access a plethora of visual, aural and social media sources to bring the latest stories of the day to life.

From his base in the heart of the BBC’s world-class news room he is able to share packages as they are filed by the BBC’s vast global network of correspondents out in the field. At the same time he can monitor instant reactions on social media and show interactive maps, graphics, satellite images, photos and live feeds of breaking or developing news stories, all in real time at the swipe of the screen.

Richard Porter, editorial and digital director of BBC Global News Ltd, said, “Outside Source has proven to be a real success story and an example of how TV and digital can complement each other to provide an enriched, holistic and seamless experience for audiences who wish to consume news in ever-evolving ways. We are delighted by the way in which its unique and innovative use of technology enables us to connect with viewers around the globe and bring the immediacy and interaction associated with the web to TV screens across the world.”

BBC World News also announced that World News Today will have an increased presence on the channel with a new edition at 23:00, from Fridays to Sundays. Already a well-established brand in the schedule, World News Today brings viewers the latest international news, trusted information and in-depth global analysis, as well as sport and business news via its network of multimedia, multilingual reporters.
