When Thierry Boudinaud and Guy Anderson first created these delicious wines, they did it with gusto. They poured their heats, souls and great dollops of generosity into every bottle. In fact, it was a great big discovery (in winemaking terms) that led to the name ‘Fat Bastard’. It comes from having left the wines on the lees for a lot longer than usual, which allowed it to develop more fully and completely, and when tasted, there was simply no other way to describe it other than: “Well, now that’s a fat bastard.”

This tradition of creating full-bodied wines to be enjoyed with bellyfuls of laughs and good-natured cheer continues today. Robertson Winery’s winemakers give nothing short of their all when meticulously nurturing the Fat Bastards to perfection. Whether it’s a celebration, a kuier or a ‘come on over’, there’s a Fat Bastard (or two) waiting to be opened.

About Fat Bastard

The name might be fun but the wine is serious. This high quality, fruit-driven, rich and round, food-friendly range of wines, with a delightful story behind its name, includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinotage, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in addition to the newly-released Merlot and Pinot Noir Rosé. The Fat Bastard white wines, retailing between R75 and R80 nationally, are made by winemaker François Weich. The Fat Bastard red wines retail between R95 and R100 and are made by winemaker Jacques Roux.

Robertson Winery, 160km from Cape Town, is situated in the Robertson Wine Valley. The tasting room is open seven days a week.
