The agencies, appointed by New Zealand based promotional company, On The Road Events can confirm that the world’s most loved basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters will again be visiting South African shores. This sees a return after the teams 1996 and 1997 country wide tours.

The Harlem Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team that combine athletics, theatre and comedy; and are confirmed to be visiting several cities in South Africa later this year.

In 1996, the Harlem Globetrotters made history as the first international basketball team to play in a free democratic South Africa. In 1997 the team returned for Mandela’s 79th birthday celebration in Cape Town.

During the team’s two previous South African visits, they reached out to communities, hosted clinics for children, visited schools, hospitals and the underprivileged. The tour was seen by nearly half a million children and adults and the sponsors raised over one million dollars for the Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund.

When talking of their trip, Globetrotters veteran Wun 'The Shot' Versher says, “Wherever we went, whether it was a clinic, a school or a hospital, I didn’t want to leave. I just wanted to reach out, touch and talk to as many people as I could. I believe that the Globetrotter players actually took more from the experience than the South African people. It was awesome.”

It is not the first time Treble and go4word have worked together. They have previously collaborated on DHL Express Africa as well as their sponsorship properties such as Western Province, Manchester United and DHL Stormers. Michelle Rolfe, joint MD of go4word says of the new appointing: “We are thrilled to be working with the Harlem Globetrotters. It’s an honour for our agency to team up with one of most loved and recognised sport teams globally.”

In the first quarter of 2015, the Harlem Globetrotters will play in over 10 countries with additional venues to be confirmed before the SA leg of their world tour, giving testament to the universal love of the team.

“It will be great to bring back an elite team that delivers it all in one package: extraordinary skills and theatrical antics; this is family entertainment at its best”, said Kyle Nel managing director of Treble Entertainment.
