The Volunteer Wild Fire Service is one of the organisations that have mobilized to protect the landscape and communities affected by the fire. They are in desperate need of funds for resources and equipment in order to continue their courageous campaign.

The radiothon, which launched at 11:00, aimed to raise R250 000 for the Volunteer Wild Fire Service and others on the frontline, who are currently fighting 15 fires across the Western Cape.

Public, private and corporate citizens rose to the call made by the radio stations and their generosity exceeded all expectations. Within four hours, over R1-milllion had been pledged. By 17:00, the tally was nearing R2-million and by the time the pledge line closed at 19:00, R3-million had been committed.

KFM and CapeTalk station manager, Colleen Louw said: “We are so proud of the superhuman efforts of the firefighting organisations, as well as our remarkable listeners who have been so willing to assist in any way possible. As stations close to our communities, we are touched by the way that Capetonians have come together at this very challenging time.”

About 4000 hectares of land have been affected and a total of 13 houses have been evacuated. Firefighters are bracing for a fourth consecutive night battling the blazes.
