Farkhunda, a 27-year-old Afghan woman and religious scholar, was beaten to death in the streets of Kabul in March this year. The murder sparked unprecedented protests in the capital, demanding justice and an end to violence against women.
Farkhunda was attacked after she had reportedly been arguing with a Mullah about the practice of selling charms in front of a mosque. He falsely accused her of burning the Koran. Witnesses say hundreds of civilians flocked to the mosque on hearing the accusation and began beating Farkhunda. She was run over by a car and her body dragged through the streets and set alight.
Her brutal killing was recorded on cell phones by her attackers and by people in the crowd and later uploaded on to social media sites. The police, clearly visible in the footage, failed to help her.
Our World - The Killing of Farkhunda tells the story of her death through the voices of Farkhunda’s family and through others who became caught up in her case – including an exclusive interview with the family of one of the perpetrators.
It airs on Friday, 7 August at 22:30 on BBC World News, channel 400 on DStv. It repeats on Saturday, 8 Auguat at 13:30 and 18:30 as well as on Sunday, 9 August at 19:30.
