It was American President, Benjamin Franklin, who said: “Any fool can criticise; condemn; and complain, and most fools do.” South Africans have had to endure intense criticism during the years preceding the recent FIFA World Cup, when the country’s detractors insisted it would be a botched, inefficient, crime-ridden misadventure. One important consequence of this has been the upsurge in solidarity among South Africans, who’ve rediscovered pride in their identity and the kind of optimism last experienced when former President Nelson Mandela came to office.
But the most welcome spin-off has been the boost in self-confidence given to South Africans.

For women in South Africa, the lesson has been even more meaningful. We have the skills; the resources; and the savvy to join the global swell of 'lipstick entrepreneurs', who’re changing the economic landscape on almost every continent. All we lack are the confidence and courage to claim our success.

It’s time to believe we can. Ke nako, indeed.
