An exciting youth festival running from 1 to 19 June that connects several performing arts genres such as music, dance, praise poetry and choral performances with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) into a vibrant experience.

Bash or be Bashed – 9 to 18 June

This lively musical drama is set against the backdrop of a matric ball after party. It highlights modern trends on drugs, HIV/AIDS, and how easy it is to be infected or affected. It explores the division between school-going and out-of-school youth; how each group perceives the other, and the attitudes towards those who refuse to touch drugs or engage in casual sex. It also incorporates how bullying plays a part in infecting and affecting the innocent. Tickets cost R50 at the Arena.

Battle of the Youth Jazz Bands – 16 June

Bands such as Ihlumelo Big Band, New Africa Face, Delft Big Band and many more legendary artists build on legacy of the 2010 World Cup Cultural Village in Langa. Tickets cost R40 at the Theatre.

Indigenous Music, Dance, Poetry – 17 June

This is an exciting youth performance of music, dance, and praise poetry, creating a vibrant African experience. Groups such as Buyelekhaya Traditional Group, Hlanganani Marimba Band, Ezomthonyama Traditional Dance Group are to enthral audiences. Tickets cost R40 at the Theatre.

A Choral Tribute to Madiba – 18 and 19 June

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) with Joyfull Harmonies, Simon Alumni Estes Choir, Heavenly Voices, CPUT Choir and the Procantu Youth Choir performs a powerful homage to honour statesman Nelson Mandela with reverberating choral sounds. Tickets cost R40 at the Theatre.

Somebody to Love – 8 to 12 June

The legendary music of rock super group, Queen, comes to life on stage in a sleek, seductive celebration of love, with singers and dancers from the Johannesburg-based Mzansi Productions. Using a selection of 18 of Queen’s greatest songs and ‘some of the most beautiful bodies on the South African stage’, the choreographers have sculpted a two-part homage to love. Tickets range from R60 to R155 at the Theatre.

Youth Day workshop – 16 June

In celebration of Youth Day on 16 June some 300 young people from various youth organisations will attend a workshop facilitated by Gen Pagpa of the Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Centre. Entrance is free in the Chandelier Foyer.
