Figuring out Father with Athele Oosterbroek

If the surname ‘Oosterbroek’ makes you think of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, Ken, you’ll be on the right track as this true story is written by his sister, Athele. It is a riveting read, at times making you uncomfortable with the depth of insight offered.

If you’re a regular reader of my reviews, you will already know that I have a love for anything with a psychological aspect; this book definitely delivers. Titled Figuring out Father, it’s a tale that takes you through Oosterbroek’s life experiences, from early childhood on through her many relationships – especially the stormy one with her father, which leads her to follow an intense journey towards a better understanding of her self-sabotaging behaviours and co-dependency and becoming a more authentic version of who she is. Through this, she gains better understanding of herself.
What’s interesting about this book is the point that any ‘dis-ease’ manifests itself when we have emotional turmoil (something that stuck with me throughout my psychology studies). Another point that resonated was Oosterbroek’s experience with a grand master hypnotherapist who helps her regress to a past life in order to better understand the turbulent dynamic she shared with her father in this life – but I won’t spoil it for you. If you’re interested, get a copy for yourself!
From start to finish, the novel takes you through her journey in stages that are neatly sectioned off in chapters titled forgiveness, healing, truth, release, understanding, synthesis, courage, transformation and independence. Each offers practical tips on how to go through the same process yourself, along with a suggested affirmation towards a new thought pattern for each theme. In following and understanding how she became the person she is now, the book has inspired me to follow a similar journey myself.
The best autobiography I’ve read thus far. Figuring out Father is published by Quickfox Publishing.
