This series is one of the ways that the orchestra is breaking free of traditional expectations and reaching out to the community in new ways to create a memorable evening of wonderful music.

Intimate Encounters
gives patrons the opportunity to experience music for a smaller orchestra in a relaxed, weekend atmosphere. They will also have the opportunity to mingle with musicians during interval while enjoying snacks and drinks from the cash bar.

This new series is partly an offshoot of the orchestra’s new music programme where reading sessions are held periodically to give South African composers an opportunity to hear their works in rehearsal and discuss their music with the coordinator of the New Music Initiative, composer David Plylar. Scores from around the country are reviewed and selected by Plylar and conductor Lykele Temmingh; they are chosen based on merit and the educational impact that a live reading would have on the composer.

These sessions are important because all submitted pieces are also considered for possible programming opportunities. The orchestra has also announced that a work by Angie Mullins will be performed on 15 April and a piece by Malcolm Dedman on 22 April.

The concert programme for 15 April includes Gabriel Fauré’s 'Masques et bergamasques', Maurice Ravel’s 'Le Tombeau de Couperin', Dimitri Shostakovich’s 'Chamber Symphony' as well as Angie Mullins’ 'Murder in the Kitchen'.

On 22 April the orchestra will perform Malcolm Dedman’s 'Danses Concertantes', Ernest Bloch’s 'Concerto Grosso No. 1' with guest pianist Liezet-Maret Jacobs from the University of KwaZulu Natal, Igor Stravinsky’s 'Pulcinella: Suite' and William Walton’s 'Façade Suite No. 1'. Both concerts will conducted by Lykele Temmingh.

Tickets are available at the door for just R60 per person. Further information on the KZN Philharmonic and its activities is available at www.kznpo.co.za or browse from your smartphone. For enquiries, call 031 369 9438 or email [email protected].
