The search to find South Africa’s ultimate dinner party host heads to the laid back surf-city of Durban in the ninth episode of Come Dine with Me SA on Monday, 19 November at 20:00 on BBC Entertainment, channel 120 on DStv.
For this episode, self-styled intellectual and foodie Bradley Naidoo pits his culinary skills against self-styled Bond Girl, Millie Rathinam, whose piercing laugh would get her a 008 rating with a license to shrill. Matthew Holden, barista and pastry-chef student who brings new meaning to the word nutty, and sports fan Alwene Du Preez, a vegetarian who eats nothing with a face battle it out for the R5000 cash prize and R5000 worth of Pick 'n Pay vouchers.
One should have guessed this crowd would bring the house down when Du Preez’ flirty first night gift to host Naidoo – a potted love fern – gets short shrift and ends up inside an under-sink cupboard – did no-one tell her Naidoo is married? Amid his offering of a three-ways prawn starter, beef fillets and chocolate mousse cake, guests had to deal with Holden’s multiple personalities with accents to boot, Rathinam’s laugh and Du Preez' smouldering dress-sense.
Night two’s James Bond inspired hosting fell to eccentric Rathinam – someone call the Seventies – there’s creamy chicken vol-au-vents on the loose. Not to be outdone by curry aficionados Naidoo and Rathinam, Du Preez butches up and proclaims that no chilli is hot enough for her and is put to the eye-watering test which she passes breathlessly. The Bond theme was everywhere - an Du Preez hip flask in the cunning disguise of a mobile phone, Naidoo’s flashy suit which could have doubled as a solar panel, and the presence of Holden, who fortunately has one of his many alter ego’s, a Bond version ready to hand.
One of Holden’s personalities hosts night three, which saw a clothing designer theme creep in with starters called Valentino and a mains dedicated to Alexander McQueen, hilariously called Stewed McQueen – well, hilarious to Holden anyway. With Holden most impressed by Holden’s barista skills after sipping a welcome coffee, the night goes downhill after that, with odd combo’s like Holden’s chocolate Bunny Chow causing not only confusion but some harsh scoring.
With a burnt dessert and a trio of bruschetta’s almost heading the same way, Du Preez’ prep for the final night’s hosting needs direction, with all hope resting on her seared tuna mains. And on her short skirt of course. Kudos goes to her though as a vegetarian serving her guests meat. A night laden with chilli, undercurrents and one-upmanship, does she have what it takes to win?
