The sisters, who made it to the final three in the 2013 competition and won fans over with their vivacious personalities, will be leading the classes on Sunday, 27 September at 13:00 and 14:00, and are looking forward to imparting their knowledge and advice to class participants on how to make, what they believe is, the ultimate burger.
The Van der Wats’ involvement in the Robertsons Ultimate Burger Classes comes in the same month they released their first recipe book Two, which Leandri describes as “a great book for foodies or people who are still learning about how rewarding it is to make their own food from start to finish”.
Since finishing runner up in Masterchef 2013, Leandri, who works as a formulations chemist and biomedical scientist, has taken co-ownership of a coffee roastery, which she says was a direct result of her experience and network generated through Masterchef.
“Masterchef helped me answer many ‘what ifs’ in my life. I think the real power of the show is not what it offers you – if you're lucky enough to win it all, in the end – but that it opens up your mind a little and reawakens dreams. In that sense, I'm particularly grateful because the experience reminded me of some dreams I had as a child, such as writing my very own recipe book.”
Leandri says she hoped her career would result in her working in the food industry as a “food scientist of sorts”, working with flavours and nutrition. “To do that, I'm looking at a few PhD programmes to merge my love for food and science into one. I'd also love to continue to be a food columnist and possibly write another cookbook,” she says.
Seline, who finished third, says publishing a cookbook had also been one of her life-time dreams, and was one of many desires that Masterchef helped her achieve. Currently, she is working as a private chef, cooking for clients’ special occasions, doing bespoke pastry, cakes, and corporate work.
The sisters’ skills and effervescent relationship will be showcased at the Taste of Joburg classes, where they will use the best meat and mixes of Robertsons herbs and spices to create perfect burgers, and teach others how to do so in their own homes. Those taking the class will also get to taste their own burger creations, which will be braaied for them on the spot.
“We'll be adding an element of fun and banter, being two sisters who often argue about small things and have our unique personalities. We like the idea of Robertsons combinations because we're a pair and do most things together, so we'll be interacting and having a lot of fun with the participants,” says Leandri.
Seline agrees; “Things are better when they come in twos, and that’s exactly what we will bring – fun, lots of banter, and lots of tips.”
All class participants will receive a free braai caddie with the latest Robertsons spices. Class attendants will also stand the chance to walk away with a free copy of celebrity chef Justin Bonello’s latest book, Road Tripping.
