Founded by Sonwabile Ndamase, the head of Vukani Fashions and the South African Fashion Designers Agency, the aim of the awards is fivefold:

  • Create innovative clothing which reflect the cultures of South Africa;
  • Stimulate competition among South African designers;
  • Expose designers to fashion buyers and consumers;
  • Promote the work of designers at exhibitions both in South Africa and internationally; and
  • Educate, train and offer career opportunities to promising South African designers.

The finalists for this year’s awards were Annah Mofokeng, Adadume Ndabankulu, Ayanda Poswa, Athenkosi Mgudlwa, Mothibi Maema, La-Toya Mashile, Mmaphefo Dibetso, Karabo Mokgoatlheng, Simo Matomela, Qaqamba Ndwandwa, Thabiso Xhaya, Siyamcela Sobalisa, Samaswazu Mathole, and Vuyani Mdalose.

The theme for the awards was 'The Enlightened Ones: Guardians of uBuntu', where designers were tasked with reaching deep into their imagination to ensure their seven-garment collections flowed, connected with the audience, and were distinct in how they embodied the awards’ theme.

The material on show did just that, with the 14 entrants putting on an exhibition of imagination and craftsmanship, with sometimes edgy designs. During the show, Mathole’s designs noticeably caught the eye of the audience, his male suit with animal print was a particularly striking example of where Mathole’s skills came to the fore.

The judges concurred, with Mathole picking up the Overall Winner award for a collection which was stylish, powerful, and firmly rooted in South African culture, while at the same time encapsulating this year's theme.

The award for the Most Innovative Designer went to Matomela, while Mofokeng took home the award for his skills in using social media to promote his brand.
