The station has embarked on a digital campaign that includes a photo shoot with most of the stations’ talent and on-air support with interviews with storytellers.
The stations’ 16 Days of Activism campaign includes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Wednesday, 25 November), World Aids Day (Tuesday, 1 December), International Day of Persons with Disabilities (Thursday, 3 December) and International Human Rights Day (Thursday, 10 December).
5FM presenters participated in a photo shoot that highlighted these important days fall within the 16 days of activism. Presenters posed with protest boards with specially chosen lyrics from songs that speak about human rights, AIDS and violence against women and children. These images form will be released daily across all 5FM social media platforms.
Station manager Justine Cullinan says; “5FM’s purpose is to bring together youthful South Africans through the power of music. For the 16 Days of Activism we are empowering our 5FM family of presenters to speak out against abuse of women and children using their favourite song lyrics to raise awareness through the healing power of music. 5FM’s family consists of a majority of women, so we need to do everything we can to protect, promote and empower women in South Africa.”
On International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Poppy Ntshongwana will be speaking to Claire McFarlane on The House of Poppy. McFarlane is a rape survivor and founder of ProjectBRA, whose global campaign is to create a dialogue about rape and the healing process. McFarlane’s rapist was found 10 years after the incident through DNA, but he remains a free man. In response she undertook to run the beaches of every coastal country in the world, barefoot where possible, in under three years.
On World Aids Day, DJ Fresh will be chatting to the Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi on Fresh@5 as well as wheelchair tennis player Evans Maripa and Paralympian Samkelo Radebe on International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
On Friday, 4 December, Nick Hamman will play host to a special edition of 5Talks with a panel of guests, which include clinical psychologist Joanna Kleovoulou from PsychMatters Family Therapy Centre. The panel will be focusing discussion on violence against women and children.
