On Mandela Day this year, Debonairs Pizza is delivering a world of difference. At no additional cost, Debonairs Pizza dough goes a long way.

Doughnation, a CSI initiative by Debonairs Pizza, is based on a simple mechanic. Through the Doughnation initiative, the off-cuts of dough that remain after making the delicious pizza bases are collected and baked into flat loaf breads. These are then handed over to a local charity or organisation in the community that each restaurant operates in to truly make a difference in their everyday lives.

This Mandela Day, Debonairs Pizza restaurants around the country have committed to making a special Doughnation delivery to their chosen charities, ensuring that through their purchases, Debonairs Pizza customers are not only feeding themselves, but those less fortunate at no additional cost.

“It’s very easy for the Debonairs Pizza customer to do good this Mandela Day. Every time they buy a delicious pizza from Debonairs Pizza, they are not only feeding themselves, but helping to feed someone in their community who is in need and without making any extra payment on their purchase,” says Toni Joubert, marketing executive for Debonairs Pizza.

According to World Hunger statistics in 2015, 800 million people continue to go to bed hungry. This means that one in nine people on this planet do not have access to the nutrients and vitamins essential for proper development and health. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest prevalence (percentage of population) of hunger. One in four people in South Africa currently suffers hunger on a regular basis and more than half of the population live in such precarious circumstances that they are at risk of going hungry. Although SA has enough food to feed its entire population, many people, especially the poor in the rural areas, still remain vulnerable to hunger.

In a country where pockets are shrinking with food prices constantly going up, the less fortunate within communities can easily be ignored. Sadly, sometimes there just isn’t that much extra to give. This Nelson Mandela Day, Debonairs Pizza is encouraging all South Africans to Try Something Amazing while doing good.

“Our customers are at the heart of Doughnation; without their support, Debonairs Pizza would not be able to deliver this world of difference. So every purchase a customer makes is a doughnation that helps us honour the spirit of Mandela Day,” says Joubert.
