The SASKO team mobilised their head office and all 12 of their bakeries across the country with one purpose in mind: To yield their butter knives while making sandwiches and share the goodness in honor of Nelson Mandela. More than 16 000 sandwiches were distributed from 21 of SASKO’s depots around the country and participating bakeries delivered to Early Childhood Development Centre’s and Churches in their surrounding communities.

The bakeries spent the morning spreading joy with the SASKO bread truck delivering lunch, on what also marked day one of the new term at primary schools – where poverty and hunger is still a big problem in education. A total of 23 million primary school children in Africa go to school hungry, three million of those children live in South Africa.

Although SASKO ran its own brand drive, it also collaborated with renowned Cape Town chef, Jenny Morris, and donated SASKO Flour for the Pancake Flipping drive which took place at the Cape Quarter in De Waterkant. All proceeds from the day will be donated to Salesian Institute Youth Project in Greenpoint. Volunteers gathered to flip hundreds of pancakes as visitors and businesses in the centre reached into their pockets to support a good cause.
