Business Engage established the Gender Mainstreaming Awards three years ago to encourage private sector companies to buy in to more meaningful representation of women in the mainstream of business. The awards are sponsored by PwC. The awards not only focus on women’s issues but business issues as an approach to gender diversity, hence the target audience incorporates both male and females.

The awards have three broad categories: private sector, government and the Momentous Award. The private sector awards have eight sub-categories. Vuma Reputation Management, a diverse and integrated team of experts, with more than 90% women, won the award in the Women Empowerment in the Workplace (non-JSE-listed organisations) category.

Being a woman in business in Africa is a privilege. It provides opportunities to lead with heart, encourage transformation and diversity, and showcase gender mainstreaming in the working environment, says Janine Hills, founder and CEO of Vuma Reputation Management. She went on to say the best advice she has received was from Joan Joffe - “Never lose your femininity, be confident and precise”.

Vuma Reputation Management specialises in building an organisation’s reputation from the inside out. It focuses on reputation management, government protocol, stakeholder relationship management, media relationship management, crisis communication, public relations and the reputation academy.

“We founded the company to enhance the standard of communication in South Africa and Africa by means of consulting, coaching, guiding and training. The reputation of a company is key to its success. We pride ourselves on having been in the forefront of adding value to clients’ reputations, which ultimately builds our country’s reputation,” says Hills.

The company has an extensive track record and has implemented work for a number of listed and non-listed companies on the African continent and globally. The team lives by the approach of “Africans working for Africa”. Vuma is a proud AAA level 1 B-BBEE contributor and was also a finalist this year in the Standard Bank Top Women Awards, which acknowledge the most influential women in business and government.

“Vuma is proud to be associated with awards of this calibre and we endeavor to be pioneers in the business of gender mainstreaming,” says Hills.
