Members of the public are invited to join the action, free of charge, and cheer on the competing teams. Twelve Apostles Hotel deputy general manager, Gavin Ferreira, is delighted with the growing appeal of the event; “The tourism and hospitality industry is the heart and soul of Cape Town, an absolutely vital component of our beautiful city. The Waiters’ Race is a chance to bring hotels together to celebrate the industry - and to help raise money for an important cause.”

Several Cape Town hotels and restaurants will once again take part in this fundraising event. Waiters will compete in teams of four, racing each other while holding a tray with one hand, stacked with a bottle of sparkling wine and balancing two full champagne flutes. The aim is to do a fast paced walk from one end of the track to the other and switch team members until the last waiter has completed the race. During the relay, no running is allowed and spilling will count against the team. The general managers of the city’s top hotels and senior restaurant managers too will have a chance to compete in a series of challenging and fun races, including a wooden spoon race.

All proceeds of the day, including team entry fees, food, beverages and raffles sold, will be donated to Movember SA in support of CANSA and the Movember Foundation. Movember is a global men’s health movement that uses the moustache as a catalyst to give men the opportunity to learn, and talk about health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer. The aim is to recruit a total of 30 teams this year and raise a minimum of R50 000.

The hospitality community in Cape Town is invited to enter the Waiters’ Race and sign up a team of four. The entry fee of R1000 per team and covers the race number, a glass of MCC per person, morning coffee, sandwiches, and a certificate of attendance.
