Not so “True” Love

It was a bit difficult to figure out why True Love was trending on Monday morning. In between the happy tweets and the “true love doesn’t exist” rants, it became clearer as the story picked up. True Love readers were not happy with how the magazine had photo shopped cover star, Lerato Kganyago. Kganyago looked unrecognisable, and people were not impressed. But how the magazine responded took the cake.

Instead of apologising, they did the worst thing the media can do in 2016 – they body shamed her. They released all the untouched images to the public, accompanied by a statement saying that they “would never intentionally do anything to compromise women and their public profile”.

Even worse, what Kganyago spoke about in the article was completely overshadowed by the controversy. Uh, it’s 2016 people – can we stop telling people what they look like is more important than what they have to say?

Cell C host their 14th #GirlChild2016 'Dream, Believe and Achieve'

On Thursday, Cell C’s 14th annual Take A Girl Child To Work Day kicked off. The campaign is aimed at imparting knowledge to young girls in South Africa, and to inspire them to join the working world and make a difference in South Africa. While many companies participated, below are a few of our favourites.

SAPS got involved by staging a hostage situation, showing the young girls what it takes to be a police officer in South Africa.

Radio DJs Nicole da Silva from 5fm and Metro FM’s Mo Flava welcomed girls into their studios, showing them behind the scenes of broadcasting.

The Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, hosted a group of young girls too and her office tweeted away, sharing images and videos of the girls’ experience.

SA rap drama

Since early Friday morning, #Skelm has been trending. The only man to have filled up the Dome, Casper Nyovest, released a new album and Tweeps were pretty excited.

That is until AKA’s baby mamma drama took over the trending lists. The #3RDWRLDBOSS took to Twitter to rant about his ex Zinhle. AKA says he’s “done being quiet”, and he sure is. From saying DJ Euphonik is using her, to asking why she has photos of his mom and not hers, to claiming that Zinhle was trying to get Bonang’s sponsors’ to drop her – it’s a year’s worth of feeling that’s now been shared with the world.

We’re not sure what started it, or where it’s going. One thing’s for sure though – no one’s talking about #Skelm anymore.

The SABC and all their new rules

A couple of weeks ago, COO of SABC Hlaudi Motsoeneng announced that their radio stations will have to play 90% local content, sending the Twitterspehere into a frenzy. Most of the feedback was positive. Today, however, the SABC is trending for all the wrong reasons.

They announced that they will no longer allow the broadcasting of people destroying public property in protests. In a statement, Motsoeneng says they will not “assist these individuals to push their agenda that seeks media attention”.

The latest announcement has people asking; “Propaganda much?

Here’s what Twitter is saying:

@Am_De_Republic: Where is the freedom of the press. The core of journalism is to tell a story exactly the way it is happening or happened. #SABC

@the_pixelat0r: #SABC: We’ll cover that there's a protest happening, so we'll be able to decrease the number of violent protests

@deslatham: During apartheid 702 destroyed #SABC news relevance by just telling it as it is

We'll have to see where this thing goes, but until next week ... That’s all folks.
