RIP Anton Yelchin

On Monday morning, the world woke to the sad news that 27-year-old actor, Anton Yelchin, had passed away after a car accident. While car accidents are a common occurrence, the circumstances surrounding the young Ster Trek actor’s death were all too odd. Described as a ‘freak accident”, Yelchin was found by friends pinned between a wall and his Jeep.

Family, friends, and fans were deeply saddened by his passing, but 2009 Star Trek director, JJ Abrams, put it best: “You were brilliant. You were kind. You were funny as hell. And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Missing you, JJ.”

Days for Days

This week saw quite a few dedicated days, including #WorldRefugeeDay, #WorldWifiDay, #SelfieDay, #YogaDay, and #NationalChocolateÉclairDay.

But speaking of Days ... South Africa’s ‘favourite’ broadcaster, SABC, announced that they would no longer be airing American soapie, Days of our Lives. The SABC says it will only be keeping its best shows now that there is an 80% local content quota. The daytime drama, however, has been broadcast on SABC for over two decades, and is literally one of the channel’s most watched shows... But that’s none of our business ...

We’re not sure if you’ve watched Days before, but it was pretty entertaining. From alien abductions to demon possession, multiple returns from the grave and memory altering brain chips, this show sure had it all. Check out some more crazy moments here.

The SABC and #Tshwaneunrest

While we can giggle about the craziness of Days of our Lives, the daily happenings at the SABC are no laughing matter.

First there was the 90% local content announcement, then we heard that no more protest coverage would be shown. While many doubted this could actually happen, they were sadly proven wrong this week.

With the extremely violent and destructive protest happening in Tshwane, not an image or report was seen on any of the SABC channels. Fortunately for us, there’s Twitter. The Twittersphere provided all the real news the country desperately needs, it’s just unfortunate that there are protests to be covered in the first place.

A parody account for SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoneng, tweeted the following:

“We ask all South Africans to resist using social media as a news source. SABC is the only media house for honest, accurate & truthful news.”

Ah, if only... But do check out the account if you’d like a few laughs between your tears.

To stay or not to stay? That was the Great British question

The world awoke this morning to the news that Britain was no longer part of the European Union.

Is it a good decision? It depends who you speak to. Definitely not for David Cameron who was forced to resign. This after actually calling for the referendum. Shame.

Other Brits will hail it as the best thing since cucumber sandwiches or the introduction of Elevenses.

We're not going to get into the nitty-gritty parts - rather leave that to the economists and politicians. That includes all of those online.

Instead, we'd like to focus on the reaction on Twitter. Because what's better than viewing hilarious memes on a Friday to put a smile on your face. Here are some of our favourite tweets, from both sides of the campaign, including one or two possible realities (sorry).

@Senfkutte - Well scenes at the Channel Tunnel have escalated quickly. #Brexit

@pdacosta - Global markets post-#Brexit.

@ThePatriot143 - Secret footage of @realDonaldTrump celebrating #Brexit

@WithinHerSkin - What all the #Brexit voters are thinking now.

@Smarttech01 - One of the funnier ones #uk #brexit

Things are bound to settle eventually. At least we hope so.

That's all for this week. Cheerio.
