#SA Bakeoff flops before it has a chance to rise

Finally, after months of waiting, The Great South African Bake Off was here. Tuesday. 7 October. 20:00. BBC Lifestyle. And we waited in anticipation …

What were they going to bake up first? Who was going to do well from the start? Would it be as good as The Great British Bake Off? We waited. And waited. And … well … if you were one of the thousands sitting in front of your TV, you know what happened next. A special episode of The Great British Bake Off started instead. Lekker. A lot of people were the m**r in.

“Apologies. We have a technical issue,” was BBC’s first public statement (via social media) about the mess up. And this after months of advertising and hype with a special hashtag and getting everyone excited. Epic fail. Fortunately, they did apologise. And it turned out to be a good example of how to handle a publicity crisis.

The biggest loser ended up being Mugg & Bean. The morning following the faux pas, after everyone had had their rant, M&B tweeted: “Did you enjoy the first episode of #SABakeoff? Who is your favourite contestant?” Why, yes, Mugg & Bean, we did. But I really felt sorry for Oom Johan whose cake flopped.

Your bad Mugg & Bean, your bad.

#CapeTownLaws

In Cape Town, you shall ignore any, and all, traffic laws as soon as it starts to rain. And, in Cape Town, you will be robbed if someone compliments your shoes on Long Street.

These are just some of the tweets that emerged earlier this week after Good Hope FM introduced South African Twitter users to the #CapeTownLaws hashtag.

And it got funnier. In fact, you can spend a couple of hours scrolling through the tweets. We dare you not to laugh. Here are some of our favourite ones:

Nikesh X - If you have lost your mommy's Tupperware don't go home. #CapeTownLaws

KEENAN - NEVER ARRIVE ON TIME #CAPETOWNLAWS

Mbulelo Ngwevela - When some says "Dont be a naai" means "don't be an idiot" #CapeTownLaws

I can’t wait for Joburg, Durban and maybe even P.E. to join in on the party.

Instagram adds ads

Extra, extra, read all about it. Instagram released its API last week and marketers and advertisers are ecstatic. I’ll bet they are. Now, you can get a side of adverts to go with the infinite stream of food pics, selfies and sunsets.

According to Craig Wilson, any business in a region in which Instagram operates, will now be able to place ads on the platform. He writes, “For small businesses, this presents an opportunity to serve extremely targeted and demographically specific ads to some of social media’s most engaged users.”

South Africa’s fastest growing app was one of the few platforms that didn’t let ads interfere. Until now. Yay.

Til next week …
