This week, we’re discussing a few Twitter hashtags and some pretty cool stuff on the interwebs. Also, we have a little something for Game of Thrones and Star Wars fans.

Award-winning Mzansi stars

Let’s rewind back to the beginning of the week. After the Idols SA finale show aired on Sunday, 22 November, Twitter was abuzz with fans congratulating the season 11 winner, Karabo Mogane. The hashtag that trended was #IdolsKarabo.

Let’s just hope this year’s winner isn’t a one-hit wonder like some of his predecessors. Just saying.

The International Emmy Awards also took place at the start of the week. And again, Twitter went ballistic when Miners Shot Down took home an Emmy for Best Documentary. The South African documentary tells the harrowing tale of the Marikana massacre in 2012 where 34 miners were shot dead and hundreds injured.

And no, we’re not going to make any snarky comments about this one – it’s just not right. But it’s kind of sad that such a terrible event is now something that’s making money and winning awards. I wonder how the families of those who died feel about all this.

What is funny though, is the fact that the ANC – South Africa’s ruling political party – congratulated the ‘cast members’ on social media. Cast members? I mean … really? *crying laughing emoji*

Didn’t Jon Snow die though?

For the majority of Game of Thrones fans, Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, is a huge favourite. And viewers were distraught when the character was murdered at the end of season 5.

Well … it’s time to wipe your tears and throw out the chocolate ice-cream because, Snow is back! Earlier this week, HBO released the first poster for season 6 of the epic fantasy. And, to everyone’s surprise, Jon Snow was the only character portrayed on the poster. So he’s coming back to life? Our guess is he will come back as a ghost to handle some unfinished business.

The other day, in a galaxy far away

Ahead of the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December, Google did something really nifty earlier this week to stir up some excitement. The super slick ‘type this into Google’ Easter egg turned search results into a rolling yellow and black text, just like the opening of the original movie. The gimmick was nicely rounded off with the original score playing while you browse.
