All eyes were on the red carpet when the winning celebrity-inspired pieces of the PlatAfrica 2012 Design Competition were announced on Tuesday, 6 November in Johannesburg, at the launch of the third annual issue of jewellery and luxury book SHINE (and the Afrikaans version, SKITTER).
A floral tri-pendant neckpiece designed for Charlize Theron, a platinum-enhanced take on stilettos imagined for Oprah Winfrey and a bold futuristic ring created for Tulisa Contostavlos were the show-stopping winners unveiled at the event, and are showcased in the magazine's current issue.
The launch, which was hosted by the Mercedes-Benz Lifestyle Centre, was an extravaganza of fashion and design coordinated by Jan Malan, a name synonymous with local fashion. Featured along with the glitter and glow of gorgeous jewellery were the designs of Malcolm KLûK and Christiaan Gabriel du Toit, the creative forces behind the South African fashion label KLûK CGDT. A host of celebrities were in attendance, including adventure couple Gugu Zulu and Letshego Moshoeu, fashion blogger Vincent Zondo and actress Jena Dover.
SHINE/SKITTER was first launched in 2009 by Kerese Thom and Yvonne Shaff for Media24. The annual full-size glossy magazine showcasing top local and international jewellery and luxury brands arrives just in time for holiday shopping. It is bagged with the bumper December issues of three top women's magazine titles - Fair Lady, Sarie and True Love - offering readers an extra read gleaming with bling, style, trends and celebrity photos.
The magazine's motto this year is 'Keep Calm, Love Jewellery', and its creators have assembled a dazzling collection of gift ideas that speak to every pocket and purse. As SHINE/SKITTER editor-in-chief Kerese Thom says, "We've collaborated with the experts and clients in order to find the best glittery and glam pieces to reward you and your loved ones this year."
Bigger than ever, this year's issue of SHINE/SKITTER is a luxury feast boasting 160 pages, and remains a comprehensive annual catalogue of the best of jewellery, which will serve readers long past the holiday season. In addition to this year's most exciting product launches, SHINE/SKITTER looks at the big trends in jewels and luxe, such as stackable jewellery and the return of gold, with plenty of sexy celebrities like new James Bond actress Bérénice Marlohe. There is also an entire section dedicated to exquisite watches, so readers can shop off these pages at leisure.
“By far one of the biggest jewellery trends of the past few years, is the return of all the shades of gold: from rose to yellow gold and everything in between, says Kerese. “We see beautiful gold elements coming through in watches, fashion and timeless, more classic jewellery looks. In this year’s issue of SHINE/SKITTER, American Swiss takes readers through the top jewellery trends at the moment. They look at the arenas of vintage, marine blues and of course, the various looks of gold.”
This issue of SHINE/SKITTER also offers precious rewards for lucky competition entrants, with a combined total giveaway of R92 000 to be won, including a fabulous pair of Diamond Studs courtesy of Beverly Jewellers, a stunning cocktail ring courtesy of the Jewellery Council, and a gorgeous his-hers set of watches from Michel Herbelin.
SHINE/SKITTER is bagged with Fair Lady, Sarie and True Love magazines and will be on sale from mid-November.
