Community-based Prevention and Empowerment Strategies in South Africa (COPESSA), is the latest recipient of aid valued at R200 000 from the DStv Care More community support initiative. COPESSA is based in Soweto and provides various services including clinical assessments and counselling to survivors of sex and gender based violence, as well as sustainable income generating community projects.
DStv Care More offers customers an opportunity to nominate their favourite community project to receive assistance worth R200 000 from DStv. Kwame Motjwadi from Johannesburg is the DStv customer who nominated the project.
“This money came at such a crucial time when we were raising funds for our operating costs. We will be able to wet-pour rubber mat on the concrete surface in the outdoor gym COPESSA co- built with City Parks, to update our computers, and the rest will go towards the running costs for the centre,” says centre manager, Dr Nobs Mwanda. COPESSA also reaches the community through their community value add projects such as building safe play parks, parenting skills training and reading programmes.
Hloni Nkhabe, CSI coordinator at MultiChoice, says, “Our customers are as committed to making a difference in our community as we are; so we are privileged to partner with them in this initiative.”
