Although South Africa beat Scotland in their third match, the talk of the Twittersphere turned to the Australia win over England, the match that resulted in the host nation’s early exit from the tournament. The top hashtags included #RWC2015 with over 6600 mentions.

Since the start of the World Cup, South Africa ranks third in terms of the number of posts on Twitter, after the United Kingdom and the USA. Marius Greeff, commercial director at SPARK Media says that this reiterates the importance that Twitter can and does play in the South African context.

Other top hashtags included #rugby, #england and #australia. @RobHarris received the most re-tweets with over 2200 when he posted: ‘ENGLAND: 2014 Football World Cup: Out in group stage. 2015 Cricket World Cup: out in Group stage. 2015 Rugby World Cup: out in group stage.’

“These stats show that the Rugby World Cup is certainly capturing the hearts, minds and tweets of the world,” says Greeff. “We as SPARK Media are beneficial to have up to the minute social media updates and analysis that can readily be provided to brands and advertisers in order for them to target a very specific demographic.”
