The awards are an annual recognition of excellence in South African journalism. There were 75 finalists in the 14 award categories, selected from an initial 697 submissions.

The winners are:

  • Hard News: Bongani Mdakane and Kgomotso Moganedi for Senzo a soccer cheat, published in the Sunday Sun;
  • Columns and Editorial: Milisuthando Bongela for A Series of Columns - Body of Work, published in City Press;
  • Enterprise News: Shuan Smillie for The Lion of Alberton, published in The Times and on Times Live;
  • Feature Writing: Mia Malan for Desperate search for answers to schizophrenia puzzle, published in Mail & Gaurdian (Bhekisisa);
  • Investigative Journalism: Bongani Fuzile and Mphumzi Zuzile for Nelson Mandela Funeral Scandal, published in the Daily Dispatch;
  • Editorial Cartoons: Chip Snaddon and John Curtis for Marikana Rising, published on Eye Witness News (EWN);
  • Graphic Journalism: Jaco Grobbelaar for his portfolio of work published by Graphics24 in Die Burger and City Press;
  • Popular Journalism: Prince Chauke and Norman Masungwini for Meet Zuma's Nyatsi, published in the Sunday Sun;
  • News Photographs: Bongiwe Mchunu for Extinguisher, published in The Star;
  • Feature Photographs: Alon Skuy for The good old days, published in the Sunday Times;
  • Sports Photographs: Phando Jikelo for Ajax Hold On, published in the Daily Voice;
  • Multiplatform: Celeste Louw and the team (Susan Cilliers, Marietie Louw-Carstens, Le Roux Schoeman, Debree Kluge, Tyronne Herring and Arlene Prinsloo for Special project in four parts on farm murders, published by Netwerk24: Beeld, Die Burger, Volksblad and Rapport;
  • Multimedia: Bianca Bothma, Lebo Mashiloane and Anastasya Eliseeva for Lephalale in Focus, published by ENCA.com;
  • SA Story of the Year: Bongani Fuzile and Mphumzi Zuzile for Nelson Mandela Funeral Scandal, published in the Daily Dispatch;
  • Young Journalist of the Year: Jay Caboz for Dusi - Blood Sweat & Weeds and other articles, published in Forbes Life Africa Magazine;
  • Newspaper Journalist of the Year: Mia Malan for Portfolio of articles, published in Mail and Guardian (Bhekisisa); and
  • Allan Kirkland Soga Lifetime Achiever Award: Peter Magubane.
