The station will be giving back more than their 67 minutes by spending the month of July engaging listeners to help raise money for books for rural schools around the country.

Through Youngblood5, 5FM’s CSI platform, the campaign, #READSA5 asks for a donation of R10 towards the Youngblood5 (YB5) book fund. The station has set a target of R150 000, to be achieved by Friday, 31 July and the money raised will be distributed to three schools chosen by the SABC Foundation.

On Friday, 17 July, the station will be hosting their Mandela Day celebrations at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg at the Women’s Courtyard with live broadcasts of three shows, Hamman Time with Nick Hamman (08:00-10:00); House of Poppy with Poppy Ntshongwana (10:00-13:00) and The Forbes and Fix Show with Rob Forbes (13:00-16:00).

On the day, the station will host reading corners as well as a special 5Talks edition with guest speaker Panashe Chigumadzi, founding editor of Vanguard Magazine. Chigumadzi is also a speaker on issues around media, culture, identity and feminism. There will also be a special Instawalk where avid Instagrammers are invited to walk around Constitution Hill capturing images of the venue and surrounds.

This July, the station hopes to effect change in their communities and hopes fellow South Africans follow suit by giving back in a way that makes a difference to at least one life.
