The glass not only looks beautiful but also serves to aid as awareness that glass, no matter the medium it is decided to be used in, is always the better choice.

The three metre wide by two metre high LED type bottle screen wall is the brainchild of local digital design agency INJOZI and was constructed out of modular panels i.e. transparent “bricks” with interlocking feet. Each “brick” houses 60 bottles lying on their sides – a total of 1 500 bottles across the surface with a contingency for small size variations in the bottles.

The idea was conceived post a Consol brief to the agency to create a projection surface using glass product, to be used as a backdrop for a variety of performance scenarios.

“We are absolutely delighted with the results. Not only did we want to show off a product with stunning aesthetic appeal, but we also wanted to create and sustain a conversation around glass being the best packaging option, particularly for a South African audience. The wall sums up both messages quite beautifully,” says Marlene Scott, brand manager at Consol.

The content of the Consol Expression Session was displayed on the LED screen behind the bottles and Gearhouse Splitbeam created a virtual mask for pixel mapping which enabled each bottle to work as an individual 'diode' in the wall. The mask directed the light through the tops of each individual bottle. The overall effect created images out of the individual bottle 'lights' on a surface that has an additional depth and shine generated by the use of the glass medium.

Completely organic, glass is as healthy for the environment as it is for the individual. Starting its life as sand, glass is carefully fashioned into many useful products, including bottles and jars. The beauty of glass is that it is infinitely recyclable. Recycling glass products therefore contributes to the preservation of our planet. As a sustainable packaging solution, it takes nothing away from the environment and leaves nothing behind. This is what makes glass the more desirable option.

The Consol Expression Sessions in conjunction with Vuzu took place around Johannesburg. The wall was created to serve as a backdrop to promote the booth activations and is now housed at Consol head offices.
