The 64th International Festival of Creativity celebrates the efforts made by innovators from across communications, marketing, entertainment, design, and tech through showcasing creative work awarded live at an annual ceremony, which recently took place on Saturday, 17 June to Saturday, 24 June.

Working closely with Ogilvy South Africa’s Pete Little and Agisanang Masekela to put together his film submission that won him his Cannes Lions award, Malope found trending YouTube clips online and recreated four of them by casting people who looked exactly like the individuals in the original videos.

He dressed them to look identical to the confectionery characters, directing them to use the same gestures and movements in his version. Adding an extra layer to his production, Tebogo then captured shots of his characters devouring the sweet chocolate known as Cadbury.

Previous speakers have included rappers Common and A$AP Rocky, award-winning Gabourey Sibide, as well as Oscar-winning actors Halle Berry and Dame Helen Mirren.

Every year, new jury panels are put together to judge each Lion, followed by a selection process. The judges that make up these panels are industry leaders and professionals in their respective fields. The juries review all of the work entered into the awards before selecting the winners.

“Being a filmmaker from 'the hood', the one thing you battle with throughout your career is believing that your voice is needed and heard. What winning such a prestigious award means to me is that hood talent is both heard and needed; not just locally, but on a global scale.”
