On Friday, 19 June, Fabio Cannavaro, captain of the Italian national football team, paid a courtesy visit to the Phomello Primary School in the Free State.

The school is one of 8 349 schools that participated in the Schools Confederations Cup finals of the ‘My 2010 School Adventure’ campaign’, a partnership between the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee and the national Departments of Education and Sport and Recreation.

As part of the campaign, hundreds of thousands of pupils in every one of the country’s nine provinces adopted one of the eight teams currently participating in the FIFA Confederations Cup. The Free State Province, where Phomello Primary is situated, adopted Italy, learning more about the country’s culture; language; and football, and representing Italy at the Schools Confederations Cup.

The school’s Girls Under 14 team won the national Schools Confederations Cup finals competition. Cannavaro, in his capacity as an ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), congratulated the team and spoke about the campaign.

Cannavaro will be accompanied by representatives of UNICEF, the Italian team; the Free State Department of Education; and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa.
