Online advertising is expected to overtake cinema spend for the first time in South Africa this year. Research from World Wide Worx shows that online advertising spend was up 32% from last year, and it is expected to jump a further 32% this year again. At the same time, cinema ad sales have shown a decline. In general, online advertising has also seen a more significant growth compared to most other forms of media.

Arthur Goldstuck, Managing Director of World Wide Worx, says that online advertising is taking its place alongside the traditional forms of advertising in the country. He adds that the increase in online advertising is a reflection of the low base off which advertising has been growing in the past few years, and of the increasing acceptance of the importance of this form of advertising.
