Over the past 29 years, the BRM Brand has grown exponentially. This growth is attributed to the increasing support from major retailers in South Africa as well as a number of well-established restaurants, and loyal consumers who visit their Factory Rib Shop in Honeydew on a regular basis. This growth has meant that the business has out grown their current factory in Honeydew.

“To keep up with current demand and to facilitate further growth it became evident that it would be necessary to expand and open up a new factory. After many years of planning, we decided that if we were going to expand we would do it in a big way and in a way that would ensure we could build on our heritage of uncompromising quality and great tasting products. The new factory is state of the art, from the actual facility, the cold rooms, the green elements and machinery, we really wanted this facility to be a showpiece for the brand and take the Company to the next level,” says Jacques Talpert, executive director of BRM Brands.

The Mostyn Park site spans a little over 15 000m² in total with 7500 m² under roof and includes:

- Over one million kg’s frozen and fresh cold storage split for raw materials and processed products running on mobile racks and powered by an energy efficient ammonia plant;
- Strict segregation of processing areas and an efficient production flow that allows for substantial manufacturing capacity that doubles the BRM Brand manufacturing capacity at its old site, with additional space already under roof and not utilised that will allow for quick future expansion and new lines;
- Fully insulated and refrigerated production areas;
- Advanced water filtration system plus two days on site water storage and full diesel electrical power backup;
- High risk packing rooms with filtered positive airflow allowing for the production of fully cooked and ready to eat meals;
- Substantial blast chilling and freezing capacity; and
- An advanced concept test kitchen and innovation centre with connecting tasting room.

The factory will not only be able to produce BRM’s current range of high quality fully cooked ribs and poultry but has the innovation potential for grilled, roasted and other further valued added products.

The factory has been designed with energy saving and green considerations. All hot water needed in the facility will be generated from power from the refrigeration plant, rain water harvesting and partial solar generation of the electrical requirements is also planned for phase 2 of the building.

BRM Brands has always been on the forefront of innovation, technology and food safety within the industry. This is evident by the brand being the first South African company certified as ISO 22 000 in 2006. ISO 22 000 is a combination of ISO 9001 (quality management system) and HACCP (hazard analysis and critical control points) and is an international quality and food management system. The company recently upgraded its certification to the now Global Food Safety Initiative benchmarked FSSC 22 000 standard which is a further extension of ISO 22 000 with even stricter requirements.

“We are incredibly excited about what the future has in store for BRM Brands. The new factory will enable us to grow, expand on product innovation and will also help us uplift the local community by creating more jobs in the area. According to employment and dependency statistics it is believed that for every one person who is employed three people are dependent on them. Our aim is to create at least 150 jobs over the next few years thereby impacting 450 people within our community. Giving back and helping to uplift our community has always been important to us and will continue to be one of our main priorities going forward,” says Talpert.

BRM Brands celebrated the opening of the Mostyn Park Factory and Factory Shop with a launch event on Monday, 27 November. The event was attended by members of the media, celebrities and members of BRM Brands staff. Big things are sure to come from this exciting brand.

About BRM Brands

Barbeque Rib Manufacturers, or BRM Brands as the company is known today, was founded by Seymour Talpert and Johnny Candelaria in the mid 1980’s. Sourcing ribs of a consistently high quality that were quick and easy to prepare for consumers was a challenge. Talpert and Candelaria made it their mission to source/produce the perfect tasting ribs. Over the course of almost 30 years the recipes have been perfected and their dream of “the perfect rib” has been made a reality.

Today BRM Brands is not only famous for their sensational ribs but also produces and entire range of fully cooked and marinated BRM meat products. BRM are one of the leading valued added and in particular cooked meat producers in Africa and have the technological capabilities to produce and cook a variety of products from slow cooked sous vide products, to steamed, smoked or grilled and roasted products. The technology that BRM Brands has invested in allows them to do this on an industrial scale and produce a few tons of cooked meat products every hours at their plants which operate 24 hours a day. BRM Brands also has a sauce manufacturing plant that produces the unique sauces and flavour for the BRM Brand range of products.

BRM products are available to the restaurant and catering industry as well as directly to consumers through retail chains and two well-stocked Factory Shops at our two processing plants.
