To celebrate the fact that Metro FM has provided the soundtrack to millions of people's lives for the past 21 years, a souvenir book and CD have been published.
Metrospective: Twenty-One Years of Metro FM is now available online as well as at selected CNA stores nationwide, at a cost of R80. Packed with profiles, photos and news spanning the years of the station's history, it is certain to make an ideal gift and treasured keepsake for avid listeners.
Metrospective examines South Africa's changing reality during the course of the station's existence in six sections, divided chronologically according to the tenure of each of Metro's six station managers. The glossy commemorative book tracks the country's journey to democracy and beyond. It touches on the euphoric highs and the traumatic lows, from Chris Hani's assassination to the Madiba era, and from cricket captain Hansie Cronjé's downfall to the awarding of the 2010 Fifa World Cup to SA.
Delving into the country's musical landscape, the book features lavish photo spreads of the movers and shakers of the past two decades, not forgetting the musicians who have moved on to the great stage in the sky. The 232-page Metrospective bulges with fascinating interviews with an array of broadcast legends such as Treasure Tshabalala; Bob Mabena; Lawrence Dube; Shado Twala; and Glen Lewis; as well as Wilson B Nkosi, who has been with Metro FM since its inception.
Pearl Luthuli, Group Executive - SABC: Public Commercial Services, says that the book marks Metro FM's milestone in the best way possible - with memories. "Over five million listeners constitutes a large percentage of our country's population, again proving that Metro FM stands by its obligation to the people, the community and the country," she says. "It's a massive footprint, befitting a giant, and as the station celebrates its 21st birthday, it continues to grow".
