With paid circulation of 295 556, Africa’s biggest soccer publication overtook the Sunday Times to become the biggest circulating newspaper in the country, increasing its circulation by 5,8% from the previous quarter.

“We are delighted by this achievement,” says Soccer Laduma editor, Vuyani Joni. “Without our loyal readers, Soccer Laduma would not have become the biggest newspaper in South Africa. Ensuring our readers get the best possible content has always been our mantra. We will continue to do our best to ensure our readers are informed, educated and entertained – all the time.”

Peter du Toit, founder and CEO of Soccer Laduma, says this achievement reflects the newspaper’s commitment to its readers.

Soccer Laduma also has a massive digital footprint, with 1.3-million unique browsers on web and mobile, 370 000 Twitter followers, more than 2-million Facebook fans and almost 200 000 Instagram followers.

According to the ABC, Media24 maintains its circulation leadership position with seven of the top 10 newspapers in South Africa in its stable. This includes the country’s biggest daily newspaper, Daily Sun, with a circulation of over 183 000 and a readership of 4.7-million per day. Media24’s seven titles in the top 10 are:

  • Soccer Laduma - 1st, circulation: 295 556;
  • Daily Sun - 3rd, circulation: 183 345;
  • Rapport - 4th, circulation: 127 777;

Media24 has the biggest circulation market share in the daily, weekly and Sunday newspaper sectors.

“We’re proud of the fact that six of these titles cater for the black market, and also that three of them are community newspapers which serve black newspaper readers in specific areas,” says Ishmet Davidson, general manager of Media24 Print Media. “Black South Africans are a market that was underserved for decades. Media24’s investment in titles for this market adds significantly to the diversity of print media.”

“Our award-winning teams continue to bring our readers the best quality newspapers in South Africa while at the same time growing their digital audiences,” adds Davidson.
