Caxton prides itself in delivering a local newspaper that is informative and relevant to its readers. Since its humble beginnings in 1978, the
Randburg Sun has grown to the point where it was being delivered to more than 60 000 households. As the area covered by the
Sun has grown and more people have moved into the area, a clear distinction between people living in the North and South of Randburg’s distribution area has become evident.
Residents of Randburg South are spread fairly evenly over the various age groups, with a third under the age of 35, a third between 35 and 45 and a third over 45. If you’re looking for a date, Randburg South is the place to be with a full 32 percent of residents single. With only 20 percent of residents having children of school-going age, and a higher percentage of couples without children, Randburg South is not as school-focused as its northern counterpart. That said, with a higher percentage of renters and closer proximity to Johannesburg’s two major universities, it is not surprising that there are significantly more residents in the age 16 -24 bracket than are found in the north, and a higher percentage of students. Randburg South also has a more multi-racial and multi-cultural mix, with about a third of its residents speaking languages other than English, and more than a third being people of colour.
When it comes to the Living Standards Measure (LSM), residents of Randburg South are fairly evenly distributed amongst the top four tiers (on a rank of ten), with only 15 percent of the population in the bottom six tiers, and with 39 percent of residents earning under R12 000. As a result, residents spend more money on lower ticket items like small electrical appliances rather than furniture – perhaps because there are more older and established homes in Randburg South.
Residents in Randburg South also prove a little more techno-savvy than their northern neighbours, with a higher percentage of people owning DVD players, flat screen TVs and digital cameras. Around a third of residents look to their local paper for information on special events and entertainment, including local restaurants and galleries. Residents also look to the
Randburg Sun for information on health and fitness, including medical practitioners as well as general household services such as electricians and plumbers, and for updates on the schools in their area.
With the Randburg Sport Grounds at the heart of Randburg South, residents are actively involved in numerous sporting disciplines, while their favourite shopping centres are Cresta, Northgate Mall and Brightwater Commons, with the Randburg CBD coming in at a close fourth.
It is the clear differences between the two areas that lead Caxton to split the
Randburg Sun into two different papers to assure that readers receive a newspaper that is relevant and exclusively local.
