Discovery Family has obtained successful ratings since its launch on DStv in March 2016, with genres including magic, pop-science, clip-based shows, and competition formats proving popular with South African audiences.

The recent Dynamo A-Z special ranked as the top series on the channel, attracting over 110 000 viewers and ranking Discovery Family as the number one international entertainment channel on DStv1.

Overall, Discovery Family has reached a record 6.2 million viewers every month since its launch, resulting in a double-digit higher share year over year for all viewers.

“We believe that the success of Discovery Family is due to the variety of programming offered, combining fun prime-time entertainment shows with accessible documentary and pop-science series in a way that encourages viewers to be curious about the world around them.” says Dilek Doyran, VP and country manager for Africa and the Mediterranean, Discovery Networks CEEMEA.

During this open view period, viewers can look out for shows on Discovery Family such as Quarx (from Monday, 8 May at 16:00), Running Wild (from Sunday, 21 May at 20:10), and React to That (every Friday at 21:00).

Discovery Channel is the number one factual channel in South Africa, dedicated to creating content that informs, inspires, and entertains across genres including turbo, adventure, tough jobs, and topical documentaries.

Discovery Channel has reached nearly four million viewers so far, helped by shows including Brent Owens: Extreme, Authentic & Unwrapped, which averaged 50 000 viewers for the double-bill premiere (becoming its most watched show for seasons 15 to 34 since 2016), and the episode of Gold Rush which achieved 94 000 viewers – the most watched episode on the channel so far this year.

“Discovery Channel needs no introduction. Our global flagship brand for high-quality factual entertainment, the channel has been satisfying the curiosity of audiences across Africa for over 20 years. We are thrilled that even more DStv subscribers will have access to both channels throughout May and June, and get the chance to sample the fantastic family friendly content we have planned for the weeks ahead,” adds Doyran.

Discovery Channel highlights in May and June include the series Cooper's Treasure (from Tuesday, 23 May at 20:00), Hunted UK (from Monday, 5 June at 20:00) Fast N' Loud (from Friday, 5 May at 21:00), and Naked and Afraid (from Tuesday, 30 May at 22:00).
