Generations, SABC1’s highly popular, most glamorous, longest-running locally-produced soap, broke new ground when it first went on air in February 1994.
SABC1 will take its loyal viewers on a nostalgic journey down memory lane by re-screening the very first episode of Generations on local television, on Wednesday, 4 February at 20:30.
The historic episode opens with the youthful Rebecca Malope singing at the funeral of Mama Moroka. Viewers will marvel at the sight of legendary actors and actresses such as David Phetoe; Sello Maake ka Ncube; Arthur Molepo; Vinolia Mashego; Tina Jaxa–Billie; Nxolisi Hulana; and Charmaine Mtinta, amongst others, going through their paces. The late Mama Daphne Hlomuka features as Rosy in this invaluable piece of television antique. The title music, Ledimo, composed by one of the most celebrated musicians, Jonas Gwangwa, will warm the heart as it rekindles memories gone by.
A special treat in the form of a one-hour special episode will follow on Thursday, 26 February at 20:30. Karabo will take viewers on a special journey, weaving the magic of Generations down the years. The special will look at the lives and roles of cast and crew alike, who have been part of this unfolding television history. Interviews will be conducted with Mfundi Vundla, and people whose contribution made Generations the success it has been over the years. Behind-the-scenes footage and inserts from past episodes will form part of this highly entertaining special.
“SABC1 Mzansi fo Sho is very excited to be taking its loyal viewers on this nostalgic 15 year journey that has kept them intrigued, inspired, [and] entertained, while also educating them.
