There are three walking routes to choose from; 5km, 10km and 20km. There is also a new 9km 'fun run'. Participants in all events will make their way along the promenade, from uShaka Marine World to Moses Mabhida People’s Park.

In another first, some of East Coast Radio’s presenters will also walk alongside participants. Participants can catch the East Coast Radio Breakfast team doing the 5km walk, Jane Linley-Thomas and Thandolwethu walking 10km, the Drive team doing the 20km walk, and Damon Beard in the 9km 'fun run'.

East Coast Radio’s general manager Boni Mchunu says, "We’re so proud that the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk has grown to become a highlight on the province’s events calendar."

"In an exciting addition this year we have included a charity element. A portion of every entry fee received will go towards Saint Giles, a non-profit organisation in Durban for the disabled. They do amazing work providing services and support to the disabled through their remedial gymnasium and work centre. So we’re especially pleased to able to assist them in some way," adds Mchunu.

Discovery’s head of experiential marketing and sponsorships Iona Maclean says the event continues to bring Durban families from various backgrounds together each year to walk side-by-side along the scenic promenade.

"Physical activity is important in leading a healthy lifestyle, and we are proud that we have been getting Durban families walking for 10 years now. Parents bring their children along, and this instils good habits in their little people who will grow up knowing the benefits of being active. Discovery Vitality members can look forward to achieving Vitality points for whatever distance they choose to walk," Maclean adds.

Entries are now open. If participants enter by Sunday, 15 April ticket prices will be discounted, and participants also stand the chance of winning a weekend away at Champagne Sports Resort valued at R12 000.
