Hot 91.9FM managing director, Lloyd Madurai, says, "We wholly support the #LightSAred campaign. As a radio station, we’ve always had a mutually beneficial relationship with the live events industry, and of course, we work hand in hand to create all the iconic and unforgettable events that Hot 91.9FM has hosted over the past few years. We stand together with them in solidarity and assist in making their voices heard."

The industry (comprised of freelancers, venues, theatres, companies and businesses), has been unable to work since the blanket ban on all events due to the risk-adjusted strategy implemented by the government in response to the pandemic since Sunday, 15 March.

Similar initiatives have taken place across the world where buildings, monuments, landmarks, structures and empty theatres have been illuminated in 'emergency red' to highlight the challenges facing live events, music and performing arts sectors, says the team at Hot 91.9FM. According to the station, in the United Kingdom, #LightItinRed saw over 670 buildings lit, while in Germany, the #NightofLight2020 had 9 000 sites lit, to mention a few.

Hot 91.9FM calls on South Africans in the industry to join the campaign and light buildings in red to raise awareness of this industry’s plight. Individuals, companies and anyone concerned about the future of live events can participate by lighting a building, an empty stage, a garden or any object in red. They can then take a photo and share it on their social media platforms with the campaign hashtag, #LightSAred.

Individuals can visit www.lightsared.org.za to find out how to participate.
