Users will earn points on games, apps, movies and more, including in-game items and subscriptions. Users can also earn Play Points by downloading featured free apps and games.
Weekly points events can boost users' earning rates on select games and movies.
Google Play Points has four levels, ranging from Bronze to Platinum. The user's level depends on how many points they have collected and higher levels have perks like weekly prizes.
The rewards programme has been launched in South Africa and 12 other countries, including:
- Denmark
- Finland
- Greece
- Ireland
- Italy
- Netherlands
- Norway
- Saudi Arabia
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland, and
- the UAE.
The programme lets users earn points and redeem them for in-app items or Google Play Credit.
"More than two billion people in 190 countries use Google Play to discover blockbuster movies, apps that help to be more productive and books that inspire imagination," says Mariam Abdulahi, director of Africa Platform Partnerships at Android and Play.
"To show our appreciation, Google created a rewards programme called Google Play Points. Over the past two years, millions of people have joined the programme in countries where it's available," adds Abdulahi.
To sign up, users are encouraged to visit Google Play, tap 'menu' and then 'Play Points'. Users will earn three times the Play Points on everything they buy in the first week.
