When Covid-19 knocked on the door, everything changed — especially how people choose to work. The freelance industry had a staggering increase of 41% during the pandemic.

Still, this does not mean that the core of journalism has changed — only in how it is being executed.

The objectives of ethical journalism are to:
  • report the truth
  • be loyal to your readers
  • have an objective viewpoint, and
  • create a forum where the public can have freedom of speech.

What is journalism versus freelance journalism?

The term journalist refers to a person that has an obligation to always be virtuous in their writing, reporting or editing. So basically, reporting on important matters to inform the public. What makes freelance journalism different is not rocket science.

Freelance journalism means that the individual does not work for a sole publication and that they are self-employed. They also do not earn a regular salary, but they can choose the jobs they want to take part in.

You can freely choose what topic you want to cover and express yourself in the industry you want to. But remember that just because you have more freedom does not mean you can slack on the ethics.

What makes freelance journalism different?

Being a freelance journalist will differ from a traditional journalist. Your job consists of:
  • insecure working hours
  • planning your finances, as opportunities are not guaranteed
  • keeping track of your administration
  • communicating with the public, clients or designers, and
  • being able to work from home.
If the above excites you, well congratulations, you just found the job meant for you!

Be it journalism or freelance journalism, the world needs you!
