South African women’s glossy magazine, SARIE, has retained its leading position in the women’s glossies category with the announcement of the latest ABC figures. Its new circulation figures are 139 031 (ABC April – June), indicating 19% growth.

The new circulation figures indicate that SARIE is still popular among Afrikaans-speaking women.

SARIE Editor Michélle van Breda won the Piet Cillié prize for journalistic excellence; Food Editor Barbara Joubert won Silver in the Galliova awards for food journalism; and, most recently, Riette Rust, SARIE’s financial and business writer, won the Citadel Words on Money prize in the consumer education category. The title also won a PICA in 2008 for South Africa’s Best General Magazine, as well as gold in the 2008 ADvantage ADmag awards.

“We are thrilled with SARIE’s performance as the number one selling women’s glossy in the market. A second feat for the SARIE brand is that of SARIE KOS, a quarterly brand extension devoted to food, which reported its first ABC of 49 566,” says Liezl de Swardt, woman360 publisher. “This makes SARIE KOS the number one consumer food magazine,” adds De Swardt. She attributes SARIE’s success to its consistent editorial package and brand positioning. “It is encouraging to see that, even in these recessionary times, exceptional editorial offerings continue to triumph.”

In other news, SARIE’s new-look website, www.sarie.com, has grown to 25 026 unique users and 224 037 total page impressions (Nielsen Domestic Traffic) since its re-launch in January. There has been an average of 200% growth in page impressions and unique users compared to the same period last year – significantly more than the average growth of 28,5% in online readership as indicated for the first quarter of 2009 (supplied by the Online Publishers Association).
