Local Afrikaans teen comedy Bakgat! broke all current box offices records right from the opening weekend of release on 10-12 September 2010.
Bakgat! 2 seems destined to not only follow in its predecessor's footsteps of Bakgat!, which was regarded as the most popular local movie of 2008, but to supersede it.
The opening weekend results were released recently, showing that Bakgat! 2 not only had the biggest local opening weekend at the box office for an Afrikaans language film but also the biggest subsequent first week as well. At a variety of cinemas nationwide including Kolonnade, River Square, Mooir River, Key West and Mimosa Mall to name a few, it was not only the top grossing local movie, but top movie overall, beating their international counterparts.
It outperformed the opening of the recent Afrikaans language hit Jakhalsdans and also doubled the box-office taken by the first Bakgat! film in the first weekend and following week, taking R1.325 million in opening weekend alone, whilst only having been released in 41 cinemas nationwide.
It also outperformed at the box office against local English language films opening weekends for hits like White Wedding and Tsotsi. Over the second weekend (17-19 Sept) the film was still playing strong and has now added another million rand bringing the gross total to over R2,5 million.
Says Henk Pretorius, writer and director of Bakgat! 2; "It was one of the most special moments in my life when I went to go and see Bakgat! 2 on opening Friday 10 Sept, and I couldn't get a ticket because the movie was already sold out! I thank and salute our supporters and promise to keep my head down and work really hard to keep exceeding expectations. Rock it like a rock spider!"
Producers of Bakgat! 2, now look towards the 3rd weekend, a long weekend incorporating Heritage Day, with great interest to see the ongoing response of the movie to local audiences.
Danie Bester, Executive Producer of Bakgat! 2 had this to add; "We are humbled by the response of our audiences at the box office. All our effort and work is validated by the people we make movies for and inspires us to constantly raise the quality and standard of our work. We will be back with bigger and better movies!"
