The theme of this week’s Spectacular was “Showstopper” and it was an unforgettable evening’s entertainment! The Top 6 each performed two numbers – first a hit from their own personal idol and then, accompanied for the first time by the Idols Dancers, a “showstopper” song, in keeping with the theme of the evening. The special celebrity guest judge for the evening was also in keeping with the theme: Mr Showstopper himself, Kurt Darren!

And just to shake things up, this week the Idols judges reserved their comments until the after each contestant’s second performance.

First up was Lloyd Cele on the grand piano with his “My Idol” song, Owl City’s “Fireflies”. For his Showstopper number, Lloyd went for Usher’s “OMG”. After Lloyd’s second performance, Gareth said he had been “sensational”, and that he showed everybody what he can do. Mara said “that is what pop is all about” and Kurt Darren said Lloyd does not belong in this competition – “you belong on the world stage!” he raved. Randall, who has been waging a war all season long against old songs on Idols, said that was like being transported into the future by Austin Powers – “thankfully!” he rejoiced.

Comeback-queen Sindi Nene’s idol is Jennifer Hudson and she chose J-Hud’s hit from the “Dreamgirls” soundtrack, “One Night Only”. And as if that wasn’t showstopping enough, for her showstopper number Sindi did a sexy dance routine to Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”. “Can you see why we saved her?” Gareth Cliff asked. “You are the full package, baby!” Mara praised Sindi, and Kurt wondered if “people in TV-land” could appreciate the full scope of Sindi’s powerful voice. “You really have to hear it live,” he marveled. Randall agreed with Gareth that Sindi proved that the judges’ save this week was justified. “In your first song I was in dreamland again,” he complained, “but this song…” …and he got up out of his chair and gave Sindi a standing ovation…

It came as no surprise to anyone that that Bruce Springsteen is Pieter West’s idol, and he went with the Springsteen classic, “Dancing In The Dark”, which was also his original audition song back in Bloemfontein! And Pieter’s showstopper choice did indeed stop the show: he performed Joe Cocker’s cheeky hit, “You Can Leave Your Hat On”, with three sexy Idols dancers partially undressing him on stage! Gareth Cliff offered a blushing Pieter a drink of water! “I don’t think you’re the most talented here,” Gareth admitted, “but kudos for still being here…” Mara thought Pieter’s number was “quite exciting to watch” and said he was doing very well. “Wel gedaan,” Kurt congratulated him in Afrikaans. “Ek’s seker Bloemfontein is baie trots op jou!” Randall said “it’s not always a good idea to sing one of your idol’s songs, because it might not suit your voice”, but he thought that that second song was a particularly good choice for Pieter.
To vote for Pieter, SMS 05 to 37400, or call 0862277705 from your Telkom landline, or 0839010205 from your cellphone, or vote for Pieter on MXit.

Elvis Blue’s idol choice was the successful duo Simon & Garfunkel and he covered their “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”, accompanying himself on keyboards. And for his showstopping number, Elvis chose Kanye West’s “Golddigger”! “It’s very difficult to be critical tonight!” Gareth complained good-naturedly. Mara wasn’t as impressed though – she missed some of that “sensuality” from Elvis. Kurt thought that Elvis had taken the challenge and “nailed it”, and Randall said that Elvis’s first song is “such an old chesnut that people should just leave it alone now”. But the second choice was a challenge, he said, and Elvis always does well with a challenge. “It worked for me,” he said.

Adeline Mocke, who was also in the Bottom Two this week, chose the Luther Vandross ballad “Dance With My Father” as her My Idol song, and her showstopper number was “Give It Up To Me”, by Shakira. Gareth said he thought all tonight’s performances were “superb” and that all the Idols looked like pros. “But I kinda feel that you’ve reached the ceiling…” he told Adeline. Mara thought that Adeline looked good, though, and Kurt said some clever record company executive should snap her up and make lots of money! Randall said he appreciated the sentiment of Adeline dedicating “Dance With My Father” to her dad, but that once again it made him fall asleep. “I don’t think you’ve reached the ceiling,” he disagreed with Gareth, “but you could have done a lot better…”
To vote for Adeline, SMS 13 to 37400, or call 0862277713 from your Telkom landline, or 0839010213 from your cellphone, or vote for Adeline on MXit.

Boki Ntsime’s idol for this week’s show was Michael Bolton and he selected Bolton’s cover of the old Percy Sledge classic, “When A Man Loves A Woman”. For his showstopper, Boki chose Justin Timberlake’s “My Love”. Gareth said he didn’t think anyone would be able to top Sindi and Lloyd tonight, but that Boki proved him wrong. He said Season 6 has got to be the best overall Idols show to date. Mara agreed that this was the best Idols she’d been involved in and said Boki was “the best of the best”. “There’s something they can’t teach you on Idols,” Kurt told Boki, artist-to-artist. “These people are screaming for you and you’ve got to love them!” Randall didn’t like the falsetto in the Justin Timberlake song and he said he was bored during “When A Man Loves A Woman”. But the second song was better, he said. “This is what you do…”
To vote for Boki, SMS 06 to 37400, or call 0862277706 from your Telkom landline, or 0839010206 from your cellphone, or vote for Boki on MXit.

Voting opened at the start of tonight’s broadcast and will close at 10pm Monday evening.
